What is Intuitive Eating?

Many of the individuals I work with come in with rigid food rules and a deep distrust of their own hunger and fullness cues. Intuitive eating is a practice that helps people reconnect with their body’s natural signals and rebuild that lost trust. It’s an especially powerful tool for those who are weight-restored and ready to shift away from external rules around food. However, it’s important to note that intuitive eating is not appropriate for those who are still in the depths of an eating disorder.

Why Is Intuitive Eating an Important Skill?

Patients who embrace intuitive eating often report a more positive and flexible relationship with food. They’re able to enjoy a wider variety of foods, feel comfortable keeping them in the house, and experience less shame or guilt after eating.

One common misconception is that intuitive eating means eating anything, at any time, with no structure  but that’s not the case. It’s a structured, evidence-based approach grounded in ten guiding principles:

What Is the Certification Process Like?

Becoming a certified intuitive eating counselor involves about seven hours of webinars, applied skills training, individual supervision, and a final exam.

Yes! Two excellent starting points are:
